Seed Password Protection

This guide goes over the ability to password protect a seed, how to do it for races you're setting up, and how password entry works.

Design of the password

The password is a mechanism to block entry into a seed unless you know the password. The password screen sits between the file selection screen (the screen with the orange and GB) and the file progress screen (the screen with your file stats).

The password consists of an 8-button long sequence, consisting of the following buttons:

• DPad Up (DU)
• DPad Down (DD)
• DPad Left (DL)
• DPad Right (DR)
• Z (Z)
• Start (S)

If you, for whatever reason, have some/all of the DPad buttons unmapped to your controller, the C Buttons are also valid alternatives.

Entry

When in a raceroom which is utilizing the password mechanic, you will be provided the seed roughly 15 minutes before the start of the race. Upon receiving the seed, you should immediately start setting up the seed for generation and making sure your stream is to your desires. You should ensure that you're getting everything you need set up so that once you hit the 5-minute before the race start, the only thing you have left to do is enter in the password.

5 minutes before the seed start, the race moderator will provide the password to you in the form of a screenshot or text in discord/the raceroom. Go to the password screen and enter the password provided by the race moderator. Upon entering in all 8 buttons, press A to confirm the password. If the password is valid, you will hear an "unlock" sound and progress to the file progress screen. If you hear an error sound (along with staying on the password screen and the password being cleared), this means that you made an error in your password entry. If this happens and you're sure you entered the password correctly, IMMEDIATELY contact the race moderator for assistance.

If you start entering in the password, and notice you have made a mistake, you can press B to transition back to the previous screen to try again. There is NO attempt cap/lockout mechanic if you enter the password incorrectly too many times.

Once the password is released by the race moderator, the password is no longer a secret. As such, broadcasting the password entry on your stream is allowed.

If you successfully enter in the password and back out of the file progress screen before entering the file for the first time, you will be asked to enter the password in again.

Moderator Experience

If you wish to set up your own race which is password protected, you must utilize racetime.gg, this is necessary as delivery of the password securely is done via direct message to the person who OPENS the race.

Once the racetime bot has appeared in the race room, roll a seed with the Password Protect option checked. Once you receive the password, keep it to yourself until roughly 5 minutes before a race has started. This gives the players enough time to set up the seed and their stream, and also gives them enough time to get past the password screen.

Once it gets to the 5 minute mark before the start of a race, send the password to the players. It is HIGHLY advised to do this in the racetime.gg chatroom or the DK64R discord if it is a public lobby to ensure all players get the password at the exact same time.
