bhop Mapper feedback notes
- what type of other games do you play?
I'd say I'm a rather casual gamer outside of CS:S - a couple of games I've played lately are Divinity: Original Sin 2, dead by daylight, and borderlands 3
- what type of work is your day job?
I'm studying fullstack web development
- what drove you to start making maps?
well, I started off bunnyhopping many years ago and just thought one day that it can't be too hard, so I gave it a go
KarMac:
- the number 1 thing I try to strive for in my mapping is the fact that every block has a purpose
- every stage should be beatable if you fail
- every stage requires very little pre speed if you fail, but you can also speed run the map very easily. so stages themselves can be quite easy but the difficulty should come from the fact that you can speedrun the whole thing
- i guess a good map that taught me how to bunnyhop was bhop_danmark https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KlqpkrveBlI mostly because it got more complex over time, so that way i could come back over and over again and develop my skills
- so like bhop_emevaelx3's https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1CXOGJ9lF-c stages are a cakewalk each time, meaning that both running it casually and speedrunning the map are just extremely boring
- but like bhop_z's https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=83XtsMeQ0II stages are just hard enough where they're a challenge to play, but not hard enough where you pull your hair out
- but another good rule of thumb is to always make your map as if everybody playing is an idiot. if it's a difficult map, everybody playing is good at bhop but an idiot in general. a good example of why i say this is in kz maps, we always need to show what blocks are bhop blocks and what aren't. because there will always be that one guy who dm's you saying your map's impossible. and we usually do this by like outlining the block or putting particles above it or something like that
-
a good rule to follow is to just make your blocks different colors. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v-Yl8g3S3o0 like here in bhop_japan (incredible map btw)
-
bhop_lego2 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n-H_QZWVYWE - Pretty much the perfect map. So much good about this. Perfect design and textures, easy to understand challenges and stages, but also challenging when speedrunning, very intuitive design.
-
bhop_muchfast https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9fzEwPc5n6A - A good example of how you should make a map that gets progressively difficult over time. Slowly add height, surfs, ramps, forward boosters, etc. Also does a great job of showing a theme at the start of the map and sticking to it.
-
bhop_aimer - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bnWuO4NPTs0 - one of the most beautiful maps ever made. Also one of the only semi-non-linear maps in the fact that there's an end goal but how you reach it is pretty much up to you. Does an incredible job of being unique and memorable, and balancing difficulty and accessibility
-
bhop_epiphany - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z52Ar1r9jpM - another beautiful map. does a good job (which I don't see many maps do) of actually looking like a real place. It also has the strange ability of somehow being easy to both speedrun and play casually, where the stages are easy with zero speed and easy with like 2000 speed.
-
bhop_the_distance - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x0m4aGIW0WY - although not very fun and the difficulty fluctuates a lot, it is extremely unique in both gameplay and looks, being one of the only longer oneshot maps (only being surpassed by bhop_aimer). Oneshot meaning if you fail you go back to the start of the map.
-
bhop_cw_journey - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iLsqQ3W256w another great "allrounder" type map. It doesn't do anything particularly impressive in specific, just a good map in general, to both play casually and speedrun.
-
bhop_kz_mix_journeys - just gonna include this one since it's pretty fun. contains an unfortunate skip but it's whatever. Very unique because instead of there being bhop blocks, you just have walls to avoid, and the floor is constantly pushing you along https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zAAJGhTJXRo
-
quiet2 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Emy7z9I4U04 dark maps are difficult to make so this map is pretty great in that aspect
-
bhop_greenglow https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EchlILXVQvM this map has a few intended skips
- bhop_arcane_v1, bhop_bfur, bhop_freedompuppies, any of the stref or altic maps, bhop_sqee, bhop_eazy_v2
- https://gamebanana.com/maps/201164
- keep the maps visually simple at the beginning since you will need to flick your camera a bunch to gain speed
- need to have seamless transitions between parts of the levels to change cube colors or wall textures... could pair this with music
- using point lights instead of ambient lighting really adds to the feel of realism
