This project has evolved from simple pattern extraction to a sophisticated AI-powered fantasy name generator. We successfully scraped fantasy name data, built a comprehensive database of 766 authentic fantasy names from literature and D&D sources, and created an advanced name generator using Markov chains, cultural linguistics, and pattern analysis.
Our enhanced generator now produces culturally authentic, pronounceable fantasy names using machine learning techniques trained on real fantasy literature names.
The enhanced name generator transforms our static enhanced_name_database.json
(1,295 real fantasy names) into a sophisticated AI-powered name creation system:

# The generator loads 1,295 names from enhanced_name_database.json
# Organizes by culture: elvish, dwarvish, human, orcish, etc.
generator = EnhancedNameGenerator('enhanced_name_database.json')
- Purpose: Learn authentic letter combinations from real names
- Method: Builds trigram chains from names like "Legolas" → learns "el"→"r", "go"→"l", etc.
- Result: Culturally specific letter patterns for each fantasy race
# Analyzes each culture's naming patterns:
elvish_patterns = {
'avg_length': 6.9,
'preferred_consonants': ['l', 'r', 'n', 'm', 'th', 's'],
'common_vowel_patterns': ['e', 'a', 'i', 'ie'],
'typical_endings': ['iel', 'wen', 'eth', 'ion']
}
dwarf_patterns = {
'avg_length': 6.2,
'preferred_consonants': ['r', 'k', 'g', 'd', 'th'],
'common_vowel_patterns': ['a', 'i', 'o', 'u'],
'typical_endings': ['in', 'on', 'ur', 'or']
}
Markov Chain Generation: Uses learned patterns from real names
# Example: Starting with "el" in elvish names
# Database learned: "el" can be followed by ['r', 'o', 'n', 'l']
# From names like: Elrond, Elowen, Elnor, Elladan
name = generate_markov_name(culture='elvish') # → "Elorin"
Syllable Pattern Generation: Uses cultural sound preferences
# Uses elvish preferences: 'l', 'r', 'n', 'm' sounds
# Builds syllables following cultural patterns
name = generate_syllable_name(culture='elvish') # → "Marelian"
- Pronounceability: Checks against forbidden combinations learned from database analysis
- Cultural Authenticity: Validates using cultural sound preferences
- Length Appropriateness: Uses statistical analysis of original names
- 📚 Total Names: 1,295 authentic fantasy names
- 🌍 Cultures: 10 different fantasy races/cultures
- 📖 Sources:
- Literature curated (166 names from Tolkien, etc.)
- D&D Appendix B (600 official D&D names)
- D&D Naming Table (557 additional official names)
- Kismet's Fantasy Compendium (390 curated high-quality names)
- 🔤 Pattern Analysis:
- Top syllables, prefixes, suffixes
- Consonant clusters and vowel patterns
- Cultural sound preferences
- Training Data: Real fantasy names train AI for authentic patterns
- Cultural Accuracy: Each race has distinct naming conventions
- Pronounceability: Generated names follow linguistic rules
- Quality Assurance: Multiple validation layers ensure good results
- Scalability: Easy to add new cultures or training data
The database isn't just a lookup table - it's a training dataset that teaches the AI how to create new, authentic-sounding fantasy names that follow the linguistic patterns of each culture.
