• deep =- shocks that result in substantial loss to a household -- proxied by a proximate loss value
• widespread - frequency of a single shock across space
• cluster - bunching or grouping of certain types of shocks
• severity - how does the household perceive the shock -- proxied by a ranking

• type of value loss -- assets, income or both
• affected parties (hh, other hh, most hh in community, all hh in community)
• time of shock (in last 5 years)
