The **SunPy Project** is the organization which maintains the SunPy library and sponsored affiliated packages.
Its primary goal is to *facilitate and promote the use and development of a community-led, free and open-source solar data-analysis software based on the scientific Python environment*.

The organization is described in `SEP-2`_, and consists of the Project Custodians, a Steering Committee appointed by the Project Custodians, an advisory board, with community roles supported by developers who contribute to any package under the organization.
The organization is described in `SEP-2`_, and consists of a group of trusted community members the "Project Custodians", a three person "Steering Committee" who manage the project day-to-day, and an Advisory Board who provide oversight and guidance.

**Everyone is encouraged to participate in the SunPy Project.**

The goal of the Steering Committee is to lead the overall structure and direction of the SunPy Project while the lead developer works with the developer community to implement it.
The Advisory Board publicly posts the `minutes`_ from each of their meetings.

.. _SEP-2: https://github.com/sunpy/sunpy-SEP/blob/master/SEP-0002.md
.. _minutes: https://github.com/sunpy/sunpy/wiki/Home%3A-Organization-Information

The project governance was significantly updated on 16-May-2024 via a heavily changed `SEP-2`_.
This page will be updated as those changes are implemented.

Sam researches the global structure of the Sun's extended atmosphere combining numerical models, remote observations of solar structure and in situ measurements of the solar wind.
He has a particular emphasis on using new measurements from the inner heliosphere from spacecraft such as Parker Solar Probe, and is a team member of the Solar Wind Electrons Alphas and Protons instrument, which was partially built at SAO.
He is also a strong believer in the use of open source software to enable reproducible research, easy collaboration and allowing others to build on your own work without doing it again from scratch (see his github here: https://github.com/STBadman).
Sam received his Ph.D. in physics at the University of California Berkeley in August 2022 before moving to the CfA.
In his spare time he likes to play keyboard, hike, kayak, travel, try new food, watch movies!
