Most changes look OK.
Please create a separate PR containing just the clippy/cargo/workspace enabling changes, leaving this PR with only code changes to the actual codel
I will prefer to merge the code changes rapidly, yet take a longer time to research and consider adding clippy to CI and cargo workspace.
