KhaddoBondhu 🍱

A mobile application that connects people with surplus food (from homes, restaurants, or events) to those in need. Users can list or request nearby leftover food, helping reduce food waste and fight hunger in the community.

KhaddoBondhu is an Android application built with Java that serves as a bridge between food donors and recipients. The app features a modern Material Design interface with real-time search capabilities, user role management, seamless food sharing functionality, comprehensive user profile viewing, and beautiful image collage displays.

Setup Instructions

Prerequisites

Environment Setup

Clone the repository

Configure Firebase
- Create a Firebase project at Firebase Console
- Download google-services.json and place it in the app/ directory
- Enable Authentication, Firestore, and Storage in Firebase Console
- Configure Authentication methods (Email/Password, Anonymous)
- Deploy Security Rules: Use Firebase CLI to deploy the security rules:

Configure Cloudinary

Create a Cloudinary account at Cloudinary
Copy local.properties.template to local.properties
Fill in your Cloudinary credentials:

🕒 Expiry Date Fix for Food Post Creation (v3.4)

Issue Resolution:
- Problem: Expiry date was not appearing on food posts immediately after creation
- Root Cause: Expiry date was not being saved to Firestore in the createFoodPost method
- Solution: Added expiry date to the postData map before saving to Firestore
Technical Fix:
- FirebaseService.java: Added conditional expiry date saving in createFoodPost method
- Data Persistence: Expiry date now properly saved to Firestore database
- Immediate Display: Expiry date appears on food post cards right after creation
- Consistent Behavior: Same functionality for both new posts and edited posts

- No More Re-editing: Users no longer need to edit and re-save posts to see expiry dates

👤 Dynamic User Name Display System (v3.5)

Issue Fixed: When users changed their profile names, the old names remained on their existing food posts because user names were stored directly in the food_posts table.

Solution Implemented:

Root Cause: User names were being saved directly in the food_posts table during post creation, creating stale data
Fix Applied:
- Post Creation: Only save userId in food_posts table (remove userName storage)
- Post Display: Fetch user names dynamically from users table using userId when displaying posts
- Real-time Updates: User name changes now immediately reflect on all their posts
