if you want to discourage abuse, dilute the styles.

it's better to make blind users hit tab a few more to navigate an annoying forum thread than to deliver partial support. people will just think it's a bug and spam github/forum about it.

if a user wants to copy/paste a snippet of markdown in a message, it'd be nice if they could do that without having to go remove all the # and ## so it doesn't look like code.

you're probably right that users would grow to accept the way it is now. but that's not a very convincing argument against tackling this with css vs parsers (unless accessibility is the big concern).
