An Anki add-on to show a multiple choice grid of images

Screenshot 2025-07-02 5 08 13 PM

motivation

Sometimes when first learning new items, it is easier to start with multiple choice questions. Then, once you have some basic level of understanding of the material, you can begin reviewing it with less assistance, hints, etc. I find this especially true with language learning.

how it works

When you are reviewing a card, the add-on appends a grid of images below the default front side of the card. This grid of images includes this card's image (the correct one) and other randomly selected images from your selected decks. (when selecting images, the add-on grabs the first image it finds from the fields of this card's note). When you click to show the answer, the card's default back shows again and you can manually grade yourself (Again, Hard, Good, Easy). After grading, Anki advances to the next card, front side, and the add-on again inserts a new grid of images.

customization

You can specify which decks this applies to and how many images you want to show. See Tools > Add-ons > Config.

recommendations

When first learning new material, move your new cards into their own deck and set the add-on to work on this deck. Once you understand the cards more, move them back to another deck to study using Anki's standard features.
