Clone the repository:

Start the development server:
npm run dev
This application requires a Gemma 3 API key to work. Follow these steps to set it up:
- Visit Google AI Developer Portal and sign up for a Gemma API key
- Request access to the google/gemma-3-27b-it model
- Create a file named
.env
in the project root directory - Copy the contents from
env.example
to your.env
file - Replace
your_gemma_api_key_here
with your actual Gemma API key - Restart the application if it's already running
Important: Never commit your .env
file to version control.
This application consists of two parts that need to run simultaneously: the frontend React application and the backend server that handles API calls to Google's AI models.

Open a terminal window in the project root directory and run:
node server.js
This will start the proxy server at http://localhost:3000. You should see a message:
Proxy server running at http://localhost:3000
Alternatively, you can use the server in the server directory which has more detailed logging:
cd server node server.js

Open a new terminal window in the project root directory and run:
npm run dev

This will start the Vite development server, typically at http://localhost:5173. You can access the application in your browser at this address.
For production deployment:

Build the frontend application:
npm run build
This creates optimized production files in the
dist
directory. -
To preview the production build locally:
npm run preview

For actual deployment, you'll need to:
- Deploy the backend server (server.js) to a Node.js hosting environment
- Deploy the frontend static files (from the
dist
directory) to a static hosting service - Ensure the frontend is configured to connect to your deployed backend URL
- API Key Issues: If you encounter errors about the API key, ensure it's correctly set in the .env file and that you have access to the Gemma models.
- Server Connection Errors: Make sure the server is running at http://localhost:3000 before using the frontend application.
- CORS Issues: If you experience CORS errors, verify that the server is properly configured to allow requests from the frontend domain.
To build for production:

To run this application locally, you need to:

However, consider the possibility that whoever is reading your README is a novice and would like more guidance. Listing specific steps helps remove ambiguity and gets people to using your project as quickly as possible. If it only runs in a specific context like a particular programming language version or operating system or has dependencies that have to be installed manually, also add a Requirements subsection.
Use examples liberally, and show the expected output if you can. It's helpful to have inline the smallest example of usage that you can demonstrate, while providing links to more sophisticated examples if they are too long to reasonably include in the README.
Tell people where they can go to for help. It can be any combination of an issue tracker, a chat room, an email address, etc.
If you have ideas for releases in the future, it is a good idea to list them in the README.
State if you are open to contributions and what your requirements are for accepting them.
For people who want to make changes to your project, it's helpful to have some documentation on how to get started. Perhaps there is a script that they should run or some environment variables that they need to set. Make these steps explicit. These instructions could also be useful to your future self.
You can also document commands to lint the code or run tests. These steps help to ensure high code quality and reduce the likelihood that the changes inadvertently break something. Having instructions for running tests is especially helpful if it requires external setup, such as starting a Selenium server for testing in a browser.
Show your appreciation to those who have contributed to the project.
For open source projects, say how it is licensed.
If you have run out of energy or time for your project, put a note at the top of the README saying that development has slowed down or stopped completely. Someone may choose to fork your project or volunteer to step in as a maintainer or owner, allowing your project to keep going. You can also make an explicit request for maintainers.
