    Las calles se encuentran cubiertas de texto. Pintas, publicidad, anuncios,
    grafitis y propaganda coinciden en las superficies urbanas que delimitan el
    espacio público. La presencia y la permanencia del texto en la calle son una
    lucha de poder entre quienes tienen el control, la autoridad, los medios o
    la astucia para publicar sobre ella. Todos los textos son distintos:
    rótulos de fruta escritos a mano o carteles de Oxxo con promociones de un
    peso, señalización genérica del súper o declaraciones de amor con plumón de
    escuela.
    
    Textos guerreros es un ejercicio de lingüística computacional que explora
    el texto en el espacio público a través de la relación entre estructura y
    contenido, gramática y léxico.
    
    Durante tres semanas visité la colonia Guerrero, en la Ciudad de México,
    para recolectar fotografías de textos callejeros. Este pequeño archivo
    representa el léxico particular de la colonia, las palabras que los
    habitantes leen y escriben en su cotidiano. En mi recorrido también
    encontré textos que no se originaban en la Guerrero, la publicidad y los
    anuncios oficiales se leían como textos extranjeros.
    
    Partí de la estructura del siguiente mantra gubernamental: "Este programa
    es público, ajeno a cualquier partido político. Queda prohibido su uso
    para fines distintos a los establecidos en el programa. Este “poema”
    burocrático que persigue a los mexicanos en el radio, la tele y la calle,
    lo encontré detrás del vidrio de una oficina de gobierno,
    impreso y pegado sobre la ventana para bloquear la vista hacia el interior
    en un acto de múltiples niveles de opacidad.
    
    Su gramática nos sirve de molde lingüístico para que, de forma aleatoria,
    un programa sustituya ciertas palabras por otras del archivo que
    corresponden a su misma figura gramatical. Este ejercicio enfrenta a las
    estructuras de control expresadas en mensajes normalizados diseñados para
    el mexicano estereotipo con el léxico local propio de las calles de la
    colonia Guerrero.

    Words cover the city’s streets. Painted signs, advertisements, warnings,
    graffiti, and propaganda mark the limits of public spaces. Their presence
    and permanence illustrate the conflicts between people with authority,
    control, resources, and guile. Each sign is distinct: handwritten fruit
    labels, promotions at the Oxxo store for one peso, generic supermarket
    posters, and declarations of love in schoolhouse ink.
    
    Guerrero Texts is a computational linguistic experiment based on the way
    structure and content, grammar and lexicon, relate in public spaces.
    
    For three weeks, I walked through the neighborhood of Guerrero in Mexico
    City and photographed signs. I collected the words residents read and
    write daily. But I also found texts that were not originally from Guerrero,
    the government’s warnings and announcements. Since they did not form part
    of the neighborhood’s vocabulary, they looked out of place.
    
    I broke down the grammatical structure of one government mantra: "This
    program is public, unaffiliated with any political party. It is prohibited
    to use it for purposes others than those stated in the program." This
    bureaucratic poem haunts Mexicans from the radio to the television to
    the streets. I found it in the window of a government office, printed
    and reprinted to block a view of the interior, like a series of opaque
    acts.
    
    The sign is the basis for a program that randomly substitutes particles of
    speech from the photograph collection. The experiment replaces instructions
    for the general Mexican public with the local lexicon of Guerrero, rejecting
    the government’s structures of control.
