Instructions - Necessary Reunions Workshop 2025

Quick access:

Liiive

image

We'll use the collaborative annotation environment Liiive to annotate our collection of maps. Our collection of maps can be found here: https://liiive.now/l08nbpimm9b8

When annotating, please use the following guidelines:

  1. Annotate the maps with any information you find interesting or relevant. This can be anything from toponyms, to geographical features, to other iconography. Where possible, use the polygon drawing tool to mark the area of interest.
  2. You can add extra information on this area in a free text comment field. To give this information a bit more structure, put a transcription of the text between "quotes". Similarly, if you want to tag an area of the map, prefix your tags with a #.
  3. Besides transcribing and tagging, you can also include urls to external sources that provide more information on the area that you are annotating. For instance, you could link to the Wikipedia/Wikidata page, or link to the GeoNames page of a place. The fact that these urls start with http will make them stand out from other annotations.
  4. Any other remarks and comments can be added in the free text comment field like normal text.
  5. Enter every new comment for the same area on a new line, or reply to an existing comment for each of the transcription, tags, and urls. This way, we can easily filter and search through the annotations later on.

Examples

Here are some examples of how you could annotate a map:

The goal of this hands-on session is to get a sense of the kind of information that can be extracted from these maps. We are not looking for a complete transcription or annotation of the maps. Feel free to annotate as much or as little as you like.

Allmaps

Since the maps selected by the Necessary Reunions project are already georeferenced, we can look at other maps from the Dutch National Archives, for instance from the Leupe Collection. In order to load them in Allmaps, follow these steps:

  1. Go to the Leiden Maps and Atlases Collection

  1. Click a map you like (or search for other terms and areas).

  1. Scroll down and click the IIIF Manifest Link and copy it from you address bar.

  1. Head to Allmaps and paste the IIIF manifest link and hit ENTER.

  1. The map will be loaded in Allmaps, and you can start georeferencing it!

How to georeference?

  1. Start by selecting only the map part of the image by drawing a mask in the second step in the Allmaps Editor.
image
  1. Then, pick a point on the image (left) and a corresponding point on the world map (right). You can zoom in.
image
  1. At a minimum, you need 3 of these 'ground control points' to get a result.
image
  1. Inspect the result and improve or add more points where needed.
image
  1. You can also view the map in the Allmaps Viewer. Use the same link you copied earlier and paste it in. The toggles in the bottom of the page allow you to remove the map's background.
