You're all set!

  1. Press F5 or click the green "play" button (with HMS selected) at the top of Visual Studio to build and run your project.
  2. Your web browser will open to the home page.
  3. Click the "Patients" link in the navigation bar.

You should now see the Patient Index page. It will be empty.

Test the functionality:

  • Click "Create New". Fill out the form and click Create. You will be redirected back to the list, which now shows your new patient.
  • Click "Edit" on the patient record to change some details.
  • Click "Details" to see a read-only view.
  • Click "Delete" to remove the patient record.

Next Steps to Expand Your HMS

You have successfully built the core patient management module! This is the foundation upon which you can build a complete HMS. Here's how you can expand it:

  1. Add Related Models:

    • Create an Appointment model with a ForeignKey to PatientId.
    • Create a MedicalRecord model, also linked to a Patient.
    • Create Doctor, Nurse, etc. models for the HR side.
    • Use scaffolding again to build controllers and views for these new models.
  2. Implement Authentication and Authorization:

    • Re-create the project but select an Authentication Type like "Individual Accounts". This will use ASP.NET Core Identity to add user registration and login.
    • Use the [Authorize] attribute on your controllers to protect pages from unauthorized access.
  3. Build a Web API:

    • Create a new controller that inherits from ControllerBase instead of Controller.
    • This API can serve data to a mobile application (e.g., for doctors on the go) or a modern JavaScript front-end (like React or Angular).
  4. Improve the User Interface:

    • Explore Bootstrap components to make the UI more professional.
    • Add client-side validation using JavaScript for a better user experience.

    I. Core Uses & Modules of an HMS (The "What")

An HMS is a collection of interconnected modules. Each module automates a specific function within the hospital.

  1. Patient Management (The module we built)

    • Use: Patient registration (creating a unique Patient ID), managing demographic information (name, age, address), and maintaining a central patient database.
    • In our code: This is our Patient model and PatientsController.
  2. Appointment & Scheduling Management

    • Use: Booking, rescheduling, and canceling patient appointments. It manages doctors' schedules, availability of consultation rooms, and sends automated reminders to patients via SMS or email.
  3. Electronic Health Records (EHR / EMR)

    • Use: This is the digital version of a patient's chart. It contains their complete medical history, diagnoses, treatment plans, medications, allergies, lab results, and radiology images. It's the most critical module for clinical care.
  4. Billing & Invoicing

    • Use: Automates the entire billing process. It generates bills for consultations, lab tests, pharmacy purchases, and room stays. It also manages insurance claims, tracks payments, and generates financial reports.
  5. Pharmacy Management

    • Use: Manages the hospital's pharmacy. It tracks drug inventory, handles prescriptions (e-prescribing), checks for potential drug interactions, and manages stock levels to prevent shortages.
  6. Laboratory Management

    • Use: Manages the workflow of the clinical laboratory. It tracks patient samples, integrates with lab equipment to automatically capture results, and makes those results available in the patient's EHR as soon as they are validated.
  7. Radiology Information System (RIS)

    • Use: Manages radiology imaging (X-rays, CT scans, MRIs). It schedules procedures and stores images and radiologists' reports, linking them to the patient's EHR.
  8. Inventory & Stock Management

    • Use: Manages all non-pharmaceutical hospital supplies, from syringes and gloves to bed linens and office supplies. It helps in procurement, tracking usage, and preventing stockouts.
  9. Human Resources (HR) & Payroll

    • Use: Manages hospital staff information, duty rosters/schedules, attendance tracking, and automates payroll calculation.
  10. Reporting & Analytics

    • Use: Provides high-level dashboards and detailed reports for hospital administrators. This helps them monitor operational efficiency, financial performance, patient load, and clinical outcomes.

    • Why it's important: This is the ultimate goal. An HMS provides instant access to a patient's complete medical history, enabling doctors to make more informed decisions. It drastically reduces medication errors through e-prescribing and automated allergy/interaction checks.

    • Why it's important: Automation eliminates repetitive, manual tasks. Staff spend less time on paperwork (finding files, writing forms) and more time on patient care.
