Getting Started

FRC is a robotics competition that is hosted by the company FIRST. FIRST, also known as "For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology", hosts three other robotics competitions (besides FIRST), each of which is targeted to a different age group.

Below shows the robotics competitions FIRST hosts. FRC

The El Segundo High School Robotics Team currently participates in FRC, also known as the FIRST Robotics Competition.

What is FRC?

FRC, or FIRST Robotics Competition is a robotics competition targeted to students from grade nine to grade twelve. Annually, a new challenge is released. Thousands of teams from around the globe compete to build the best robot that satisfy the constraints given and perform the best on the field. The last three game manuals can be viewed below.

2016 Game Manual "Stronghold"

2015 Game Manual "Recycling Rush"

Among these annual competitions there are many similarities which can be noted for improved comprehension of the competition.

  • Each game is composed of two alliances, red and blue. Each alliance contains three groups of students; each group of students is usually from a separate school. The alliance of three teams must coordinate their activities to increase the number of points obtained.
  • The drive mechanisms on robots for different competitions are virtually the same
  • The field is usually around 27 ft. by 54 ft
  • Every year, the robot must have vision code to analyze inputs from the camera and decide what to do
