The FIRST Robotics Competition

What is FIRST?

FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science & Technology) is an organization dedicated to inspiring young people to be science and technology leaders and innovators, by engaging them in exciting Mentor-based programs that build science, engineering, and technology skills, that inspire innovation, and that foster well-rounded life capabilities including self-confidence, communication, and leadership.

What is FRC?

Combining the excitement of sport with the rigors of science and technology. We call FIRST Robotics Competition the ultimate Sport for the Mind. High-school student participants call it “the hardest fun you’ll ever have.”

Under strict rules, limited resources, and an intense six-week time limit, teams of students are challenged to raise funds, design a team "brand," hone teamwork skills, and build and program industrial-size robots to play a difficult field game against like-minded competitors. It’s as close to real-world engineering as a student can get. Volunteer professional mentors lend their time and talents to guide each team. Each season ends with an exciting FIRST Championship.

The Competition

The beginning of the build season is marked by the FRC Kickoff event where the game is announced and the manual and rulebook is released. After kickoff, teams have six weeks to build a robot designed to perform the challenges specified in the game. The game changes each year and no two games are the same although there are many similarities which can be noted for improved comprehension of the competition.

  • Every game is composed of two alliances, red and blue, and each alliance is composed of 3 different teams/robots.
  • Each alliance of three must coordinate their activities to increase the number of points obtained.
  • The field is usually around 27 ft. by 54 ft
  • Every year, the robot may use vision tracking code to track targets on the field.
