βš™οΈ Configuration

Setting Up Your LLM Server

You need an OpenAI-compatible API server running locally. Here are popular options:

Ollama (Recommended):

# Install and run Ollama
ollama serve
ollama run llama2 # or any model you want

LM Studio:

  • Download from LM Studio
  • Load a model and start the local server
  • Default endpoint: http://localhost:1234

API Configuration

The app uses environment variables for API endpoints. You can set them in a .env file:

# .env file (optional)
VITE_API_BASE_URL=http://localhost:1234

If not set, it defaults to http://localhost:1234.

Required API Endpoints

Your LLM server must support these endpoints:

  • GET /v1/models - Returns list of available models
  • POST /v1/chat/completions - Chat completions (with streaming support)

πŸ› οΈ Development

Prerequisites

  • Bun (recommended) or Node.js 18+
  • Git
  • Local LLM Server (Ollama, LM Studio, etc.)

Development Commands

# Install dependencies
bun install

# Start development server (with hot reload)
bun run dev

# Build for production
bun run build

# Preview production build
bun run preview

Code Guidelines

  • Use Vue 3 Composition API for components
  • Follow single responsibility principle
  • Use proper prop definitions
  • Add comments for complex logic

Styling

  • Tailwind CSS for all styling
  • Responsive design using Tailwind breakpoints
  • Custom CSS only when absolutely necessary

πŸ§ͺ Testing

Manual Testing Checklist

  • Connect to local LLM server
  • Send messages and receive responses
  • Test streaming and non-streaming modes
  • Check markdown rendering (headers, lists, links)
  • Test code block syntax highlighting and copy function
  • Test table rendering
  • Try stop button during message generation
  • Test model selection dropdown
  • Test temperature controls (manual and auto)
  • Test conversation starters
  • Test on different screen sizes
  • Test message history navigation with arrow keys

API Testing

# Test your LLM server endpoints
curl http://localhost:1234/v1/models

curl -X POST http://localhost:1234/v1/chat/completions \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{
    "model": "your-model-name",
    "messages": [{"role": "user", "content": "Hello!"}],
    "stream": false
  }'

πŸ“¦ Deployment

Static Hosting Services

Deploy the dist/ folder to any static hosting service:

  • Netlify: Drag and drop or connect to Git
  • Vercel: Import GitHub repository
  • GitHub Pages: Use included GitHub Actions workflow
  • AWS S3 + CloudFront: Static website hosting

Docker Deployment

FROM nginx:alpine
COPY dist/ /usr/share/nginx/html
EXPOSE 80
CMD ["nginx", "-g", "daemon off;"]
# Build and run
docker build -t chat-ui .
docker run -p 8080:80 chat-ui

Simple Server Deployment

# Using any static file server
npm install -g serve
serve -s dist -p 3000

πŸ”„ Release Management

Automated Releases

Releases are created automatically using GitHub Actions:

# Create and push a new tag
git tag v1.0.0
git push origin v1.0.0

The workflow automatically:

  • βœ… Builds the application with Bun
  • βœ… Creates production bundle
  • βœ… Creates ZIP and tar.gz archives
  • βœ… Creates GitHub release with notes
  • βœ… Uploads downloadable files

Release Files

Each release includes:

  • chat-ui-vX.X.X.zip - Ready-to-use web application
  • chat-ui-vX.X.X.tar.gz - Compressed archive
  • Source code - GitHub-generated source files

Version Numbers

  • Major (v1.0.0): Breaking changes or major new features
  • Minor (v1.1.0): New features, backwards compatible
  • Patch (v1.1.1): Bug fixes and small improvements
