NOTE! Use the Chrome browser for the voice recognition feature
- The App: https://davidnmbond.github.io/Autocue/
- Demo video: https://youtu.be/bWheWBxE33I
- Source code: https://github.com/davidnmbond/Autocue
It's free and open source (MIT licence)
I hope it's useful to someone! It's all fully open source (MIT licensed, so free for professional use), and easy to access. There's no server, so you can just save the page as HTML and use it in the field. It needs the Chrome browser for the voice recognition, and/or you can operate using keys:
- Ctrl+Enter: Presentation mode (from where you were editing)
- Esc: Back to edit mode
- Home/End: Start/End of script
- Left/Right: Word backwards/forwards
- Up/Down: Line backwards/forwards
- Page Up/Down: Story backwards/forwards
Use the standard browser controls:
- Start/Stop Full Screen: F11
- Zoom: Ctrl+/- or Ctrl+Scrollwheel
Enjoy!
#Introduction
Hello everybody. Welcome to *Autocue*
This tutorial will demonstrate how to use *Autocue* effectively, including both keyboard controls and configuration options in edit mode.
The first screen you will see is the edit mode. Here, you can edit your script and add headlines and emphasis. Press return twice after headings and between paragraphs.
#Presentation Mode
To enter presentation mode, press Ctrl Enter. The system will start the presentation from where you were last editing.
This will put *Autocue* into full screen, with larger text and smooth scrolling.
Here, you can just speak the script out loud and *Autocue* will follow you as you go.
Words will grey out after you've said them, and the next word to speak is shown in green.
When reading, try to keep your gaze near the centre of the screen. This will enable a more natural delivery.
To exit presentation mode and return to editing, press the Escape key.
With practice, you will be able to read smoothly and naturally, just like a pro.
#Navigation
You can move between stories using the Page Up and Page Down keys.
To move up and down by a paragraph, use the Up and Down Arrow keys.
To nudge your position left or right by a word, use the Left and Right Arrow keys.
Press the Home key to jump to the beginning of your script, or the End key to go to the end.
#Edit Mode Settings
In edit mode, you can configure several settings to match your preferences:
• Change the font size for better readability.
• Adjust the auto-locate word range, which controls how many words the system scans to keep your position in sync.
• Set the screen usage percentage to control how much of the screen *Autocue* occupies.
• Choose whether to see the V U meter, which shows your microphone input level and will display in both edit and presentation modes.
#Editing
When editing, you can create headers by starting a line with the hash character. The system will not listen for the headings - these are for your guidance only.
Leave a line between each paragraph. This makes it easier to track where you are when presenting.
You can surround a word with *asterisks* for additional emphasis. These appear bold and yellow in the presentation mode.
Avoid unusual punctuation, as the speech recognition cannot understand them. Avoid numbers and hyphenated words. For example, use one hundred and twenty three instead of the equivalent as a number.
#Saving Your Work
Both your script and your settings are automatically saved locally as you go.
However if you want to keep your text permanently or share it, simply copy and paste it into another program for permanent storage.
#Troubleshooting
If you experience any problems, you can simply reload the page. This will reset the system and clear any errors.
If you want to see this tutorial again, simply delete all your text and reload the page.
#Wrap-up
That's it !
Now you're ready to practice your delivery, tweak the settings to your liking, and feel confident using *Autocue* for any speaking scenario.
