Clone the master repository
We assume here that you've already created a GitHub account and made a request to collaborate on the glossary.
Unless you're an experienced GitHub user and familiar with the command-line, we recommend using the GitHub desktop client for making changes to the master glossary repository. This arrangement of working is depicted in the following diagram.
This doc is concerned with step 1 in that diagram, which is to get set up locally and clone the master repository. This should take less than 5 minutes.
Do the following:
- On your computer, create a new folder called "GitHub" under your user directory, where
username
is your actual user name:
- Mac:
/Users/username/GitHub
- Windows:
\Users\username\GitHub
- Then download and install the GitHub Desktop Client.
- Open the client and connect to it using your GitHub login credentials when prompted. Leave the app open.
- Using web browser, go to the glossary repository main page and click the green Clone or download button on the right side of screen.
- In the resulting pop-up, click the Open in Desktop button.
- When the client application comes forward and prompts you, navigate to the GitHub folder you created in step 1. That's where you want to clone the master.
- Click the Clone button.
Regarding step 1: You can name the folder anything you want, but "GitHub" is logical. You can even rename the folder anytime after cloning a repository, the client will keep the path straight and it won't interfere with the sync to master source. If you ever work with other repositories in the future, you can clone them to the same folder to keep all your cloned repositories together.
Regarding step 5: If after clicking the Open in Desktop button you get some notice about opening a "null" page, just click Yes, Okay, Continue or whatever is required to proceed with the action. It won't hurt anything.
