TimeTable

Barcoding for Beginners is a project funded by a Royal Society Partnership Grant. It enables students to engage in real scientific research using molecular biology and bioinformatics techniques, while gaining practical skills and exploring careers in genomics.

The program consists of 10 one-hour sessions, and begins with educators participating in hands-on professional development. Afterwards, schools receive equipment loans, consumables, teaching resources, and support from genomics professionals, enabling them to extend the experience to students.

Participants will:

  • Collect invertebrate samples
  • Extract DNA
  • Amplify a DNA barcode using PCR
  • Visualize DNA using gel electrophoresis
  • Sequence DNA and identify samples through bioinformatics
  • Present their findings via scientific posters

📚 Session Overviews & Downloads

Session 2 – Barcoding Basics

Aim: Understand the barcoding process, bioinformatics basics, and plan for sample collection.

Includes:

Session 8 – Bioinformatics: DNA Identity

Aim: Interpret chromatograms and use bioinformatics tools to identify invertebrate samples.

Includes:

Session 9 – Bioinformatics: Family Tree

Aim: Create a phylogenetic tree to explore evolutionary relationships using multiple sequence alignment.
