Fix for Uganda Consumption Files
This release corrects an error caused by an apparent internal rename of one of the raw data files. In addition, we have updated our data to the newest version (see update in the data repository), which introduces some small changes to rates of improved seed usage and tree crop expenses.
Correction to v1.4 release
This release corrects an error in the calculation of inflation and incorrect crop labeling in Malawi; edits to the Nigeria monetary variables correctly identifying the base year as 2021 are also included.
New World Bank Poverty Line and Corrections
This release adds the new global poverty line, $3.00 in 2021 PPP. Inflation estimates are now indexed to 2021 as we continue to track the international poverty line for all monetary indicators, so all currency-based estimates will differ from the previous release.
General Corrections/Edits:
- We fixed error was resulting in low overall productivity estimates across all countries
- Yields are now based on only crops with planted areas > 0.05 hectares. National production estimates are still based on all reported crop harvests to the extent that they are convertible to kilograms.
- Added variables for gender and personid of the primary plot decisionmaker
- The SSP variable has been updated to reflect that land area measurements are occasionally missing
- Productivity variables, including aggregate value of farm production (value_farm_production), value of productivity that was sold (value_farm_prod_sold)
- The intermediate files hhsize.dta and hhids.dta have been replaced with weights.dta, which contains the same information.
- General alignment of the individual ID to the name "indiv"
Country-Specific updates:
- Ethiopia
- Aligning plot_id with other countries
- Fix to labor valuation in wave 1 that was resulting in excessive crop expense enstimates
- Malawi
- Weights in waves 3 and 4 have been corrected; previously, panel households were over-represented
- Added dairy and egg productivity
- Major correction to the labor valuation section to reflect that the survey only requested average daily individual wages and thus total wage expenses are not computable. Some variables related to labor and labor productivity have been removed.
- Added code to estimate aggregate consumption for the panel households, which is not available in the raw data. Estimates differ from the provided consumption estimates, and so poverty is estimated based on the cross-section.
- Name changes to shorten file names and make automation slightly easier.
- Nigeria
- Removed some experimental attempts to control plot labor expense estimates (some values are most likely totals rather than per-person day) to keep things methodologically aligned. Some crop expense estimates have risen substantially.
- Added additional conversion factors for crops in earlier waves to align with later waves
- Removed code that's no longer being used
- Fixed exchange labor in all waves - previous version used the wrong question
- Tanzania
- Combined beans and cowpeas into a single category
- Removed the year tag from the hhid variable for improved interoperability. Currently working on consistent panel identifiers.
Nigeria Wave 5 Release and Data Update
v1.3: Along with releasing Nigeria W5, this major update includes several corrections and some changes to construction decisions that alter the crop productivity estimates.
- New waves;
- Nigeria Wave 5 (2023) has been completely coded.
- New indicators:
- Fertilizer application rates and quantities that decompose by identity of input (e.g., urea, superphosphate, or potash) and nutrient (N, P, and/or K) with kg/ha application rates.
- Irrigation where available (yes/no by plot and proportion/hectares of coverage by household).
- Plot decisionmaker gender has been amended to include the gender of the primary (or first-listed) plot decisionmaker.
- Food consumption score (FCS) has been added to dietary diversity.
- Changes
- Crop prices are now estimated based on the median price per-kg (except Nigeria, which still prioritizes nonstandard units of measure first) price of the smallest administrative unit where at least 10 price observations are available. Previously, we used household-level prices when present and median prices otherwise. The old indicator is now known as “value_harvest_hh.”
- Crop yields omit plots where there is an indication from farmer reports that harvest has not yet occurred, but crops have not been lost (these were previously recorded as 0). We also omit small planted areas (< 0.05 ha, implemented in Tanzania and being added to the remaining countries) from yield estimates.
- Household dietary diversity has been updated to align with the INDDEX methodology.
- Gender productivity gaps have been modified to use field size (a combination of GPS-measured plot area and farmer-estimated area when the former is unavailable).
- Country-Specific Updates
- Nigeria
- Updated crop harvest estimates to include only yet-to-harvest crops from plots where harvest had begun (mainly reduces per-ha-planted yield estimates of cassava)
- Updated individual roster to use both the postplanting and postharvest questionnaires; this results in some changes to poverty headcount and weighting.
- Removed three-leaved yams from the generic 'yam' category in waves 3 and 4 due to observed differences in planting timing (waves 1 and 2 do not disaggregate by species)
- Changed monocropped plot accounting to omit attempts to identify relay cropping (it does not appear to be widespread based on reported planting dates)
- Ethiopia:
- An error where GPS-measured estimates were being replaced by farmer estimates for field size has been corrected.
- Added indicators for approximating the Multidimensional Poverty Index.
- Added estimated unit conversions for some nonstandard units to improve kg conversion coverage.
- Uganda
- Files have been trimmed to clear out old or unnecessary code.
- Documentation has been added.
- The nonstandard unit conversion factors have been consolidated into a single table.
- Yields are now omitted from the final summary statistics for waves 7 and 8 due to uncertainties around plot area; some plot areas were omitted in the data if the plot was measured in the previous wave; because wave 6 was not released, we do not have these measurements and the yields are uncertain. Existing code still uses areas from wave 5 to construct estimates.
- Use of improved seed has been added.
- Tanzania
- Fully updated plot roster section to align with other LSMS ISA country code, mainly in waves 1 and 2.
- Modified plot productivity to use area median observed prices with household estimated prices only when the former were unavailable; prior code used the estimated value of the crops to compute prices.
- Aligned the SDD and fifth waves
- General variable nomenclature alignments with new standards.
- We noticed wave 5 has some very high (>10,000 acres) reported GPS estimates. These measurements have been replaced with farmer estimated area.
- Malawi
- Updated the plot decision maker section in all waves to correct an error that was leading to missing decision maker genders.
- Addressed women's control of income issue in W3 and W4.
- Consumption indicators have been added for cross-sectional households (the raw data issued estimates only for the panel); while we attempt to follow the established methodology, our estimates differ from those released in the raw data.
- Updated livestock products in W1 to include missing collapse and conform variable nomenclature with standard.
- Crop price estimates are now based on converted kilograms.
- Included survey documentation for W2.
- Dropped panel households from waves 3 and 4 from household food provision because we identified data entry problems.
- Nigeria

Public Release 1/28/25
This release contains completed wave do files for Malawi and Uganda and adds Ethiopia Wave 5 in addition to bug fixes for existing waves. Previous waves in Ethiopia have been aligned with the more recent code style.
Important note for Tanzania: What was previously labeled as Wave 5 was actually the extended sex-disaggregated panel (SDD) conducted in 2019 and 2020. This has been fixed, and now there are separate SDD and Wave 5 do files.

Public Update 7/18/24
This release focuses on updates to Ethiopia to bring it into alignment with similar changes made to Tanzania and Nigeria in the past; in addition, some cleanup to the headers, additions to the documentation, and tweaks to make it easier to run from a clean clone were made across several waves.
Public Update 4/15/2024
This major update cleans up the previous commit history and switches the default branch name to 'main' - please note when cloning or merging in changes.
Since the last round of updates at the end of 2023, we have added more new or revised code for Malawi and Uganda and fixed some bugs in Nigeria and Tanzania. An overhaul of Ethiopia is still ongoing and we anticipate that to occur in the next release, along with ETH W5. There will be some minor updates (mainly in Uganda) in the meantime.
