CartesianVenture This is a tile-based adventure game engine, using pygame in python, under early construction. So far * It renders a map to the screen * There is a player character who can move around with the keyboard (but not yet the mouse) * Objects have a context menu when you hover the mouse, with a list of verbs, plus "undo" and "redo" * Simple rules for object combining are implemented. * A simple room definition structure in python allows very simple but extensible definition of maps, rules, etc. Things that are NOT yet complete: * Scrolling/Multiple rooms * Show narration onscreen rather than in terminal window * Undo/redo * Save/load * Carrying objects * Different default verbs for different objects * NPCs and conversation * Game plot, puzzles, maps and graphics. I don't know if I will complete the project or if it will go in this direction, but my ambitions would be: * A tile-based adventure game, where most of the puzzles are lucas-arts style "Use X with Y", but some of the gaps are filled in with chip's challenge "Push X in front of Y using properties known to be inherent in those objects in the game world." * With a full undo and redo, so you can have puzzles like "sneak into the mansion without waking the butler", without (a) the need to load from save if he wakes up or (b) requiring convoluted justifications why every action is reversible. And even have "you must pick this object up on the first screen to win", but if you don't, you don't have to replay everything, you can undo back to the beginning, do the extra action, and then redo all the way to the end, and as long as your new action doesn't prevent any of the others you took, all the actions will be rebased onto the current game state. I have made an effort to keep the code separated into comparatively loosely coupled components, and to make it explicable, but this is my first program of any kind in python, and there is no documentation as yet. There are a number of tests in tests.py. These test a reasonable (but not extensive) amount of the backend and helper functionality, but almost none of the frontend. It's unlikely to be useful to other people at this point, but if I abandon the project, I've done my best to see that the code exists in some form, just in case. Any non-commercial use with attribution is completely fine (although I would enjoy it if you let me know!)
