Raspberry Pi 4

Usually raspberries are cheap but for the purpose of creating a desktop PC that runs Ubuntu it is only natural to chose the latest versions, we will be talking about the Raspberry Pi 4 Model B. Although the Pi 400 was just launched I did not like the fact that it comes enclosed in a keyboard, I like to use my own and for the purpose of this project, as you'll later on see, we won't even need a keyboard.

Worth mentioning is the fact that we can overclock the CPU and the GPU so definitely go for the case that can incorporate heatsinks and active fans.

overclocking requires a 5V charger

  • although the pi board can run on a 3V we also need to run the fan

Side note: what I got in the kit is not a silent fan, a 12V fan would be better (db wise) but it's close to impossible to find a suitable case for it (unless you own a 3D printer).

We'll see how that plays out as I've ordered a bigger and better fan.

I live in the Netherlands and Amazon at the time of writing this handbook was just starting to deepen their roots and were charging outrageous amounts to ship so it was logical that I chose a local provider: Raspberry Store.

The kit I got includes:

Raspberry Pi 4 model B

  • RAM - 8Gb

  • CPU - 1.5 GHz (Quad core Cortex A72 64-bit SoC)

  • Gigabit Ethernet

  • 2 x USB 2.0 / 2 x USB 3.0 ports

  • 2 x micro HDMI, 4k video

  • 5V / 3A DC via USB type C connector

  • Power over Ethernet (PoE) enabled RJ45 giving PoE capability via PoE HAT

SD card

  • 16Gb

Black raspberry power adapter (3A)

Black case

  • heatsinks *

  • fan

HDMI-microHDMI cable

Network cable

  • 1m

I was not happy with their SD card and had an old Toshiba card lying around that i used as boot medium but at a latter point I decided to upgrade and after much research there was only one contender left, the Samsung Evo Plus.

*If you don't know how to attach the heatsinks go to littlebird, their article is pretty straightforward.

UPDATE:

Changed the case with a 40mm one that can keep my 12V fan.

I didn't use the original fan from the case but it was also silent.
