How do I edit bottom status bar

How can I edit the bottom status bar? There's too much info and instead of the full path to the file I would prefer to see, e.g., characters count.

BTW, when there are tabs, file names are duplicated in tabs and in the status bar.

Off-topic: in the save file dialogue, the full path, too, conceals the ending of the question phrase.

You can change the information displayed in the status bar using the statusformatl and statusformatr options (these control the left and right aligned information).
