Preliminary Checks

  • I have read and understood the important section above.
  • I have searched existing issues and avoided creating duplicates.
  • I am not filing an enhancement request.
  • I have checked that this issue cannot be reproduced on Mozilla Firefox.
  • I have checked that this issue can be reproduced once I removed all my Mods and Custom CSS.

What happened?

When using the keyboard shortcut to close a tab (Ctrl+W) while it is focused via the tab cycler (Ctrl+Tab), if the tab is pinned or in the "essential" bar, it is completely removed from that bar instead of just being closed

Expected behavior

Closing a pinned or essential tab should only close the active instance of the tab. The icon should remain in the pinned/essential bar, allowing it to be reopened easily, regardless of the method used to close it.

Actual behavior

When a pinned or essential tab is closed using Ctrl+W while cycling through tabs with Ctrl+Tab, the tab is closed and its icon is simultaneously removed from the pinned/essential bar.

Steps to reproduce

  1. Pin a tab or add a website to the "essential" bar.
  2. Open several other tabs to ensure tab cycling is needed.
  3. Press and hold Control, then press Tab to cycle through the open tabs.
  4. Stop on the pinned/essential tab so it is highlighted.
  5. While still holding Control, press the w key.
  6. Observe that the tab closes and its icon disappears from the pinned/essential bar.
