How do I get autostart to work in Limux Mint 22.1? #3695

Did you install using a native apt-get package or a Flatpak package? Sometimes Flatpak packages need manual intervantion for the autostart to work. |

In some cases the Flatpak package fails to autostart because the required xdg-portal package is not installed https://github.com/wwmm/easyeffects/wiki/FAQ. |

I used Flatpak. I thought about adding a sudo apt install, but feared I would make it worse. I'll learn about xdg and try that next. Thanks for the prompt reply! |

I ran the permission-reset command and edited the easyeffects-service.desktop file as listed above, but the service still does not launch automatically. I note that Mint changes the displayed file name from 'easyeffects-service.desktop' to just the text string 'Easy Effects' and an icon. The other files in autostart have the expected text-only names that end with '.desktop'. There is a lot of information here regarding xdg. System Monitor reports that 'xdg-desktop-portal' is running. It started when I booted up the pc this morning and is currently sleeping. Is there anything else I can try? Edit to ask: Is there any risk to trying a sudo apt installation without first removing the flatpak? |

When the permission reset fixes the problem a window that asks the user for autostart permission should be shown to the user. After that the autostart file would be automatically created. If this did not happen then the xdg-portal package is either not the one supposed to be installed in your desktop or some kind of incompatibility in the library versions is happening.
The desktop package supported by your desktop also has to be installed. For example KDE needs
Hum... That is odd. Where is this shown? In your file manager or in some kind of autostart file manager provided by Mint? Usually desktops do not rename autostart files.
Although these packages are installed in totally different locations it is probably better to remove the Flatpak package just to be on the safe side. In the past an users had problems that were caused by this. An EasyEffects instance comening from an installed Flatpak package he had forgotten was there was forbidding the one from the native package from automatically starting. |

Thank you for being patient with a noob! I see 3 similar processes in System Monitor:
Mine is a default Linux Mint Cinnamon installation that I did after about 40 years of MS-DOS and Windows. I haven't learned enough Linux to know the precise name of my desktop environment. The replacement of the .desktop file name with the text 'Easy Effects' and an icon is what I see with the default Mint file manager. What makes this even weirder is that there was a file named 'easyeffects-service.desktop' in the autostart folder. I opened it with Text Editor, replaced the content with what you posted, then saved and quit. The next time I looked at autostart, the displayed file name was 'Easy Effects' with the 3-sliders icon. Regarding a 'sudo apt' install, the first thing I tried to fix my autostart problem was to remove the flatpak using Software Manager and manually install with sudo apt. Launching Easyeffects after the sudo apt install revealed that none of the plugins (maybe not the correct term) were installed. I did not feel knowledgeable enough to add the missing pieces manually, so I removed with apt command and installed the flatpak again with Software Manager. Edit to say that I forced the file name back to 'easyeffects-service.desktop' in the File Manager properties popup and rebooted. The file name stayed 'easyeffects-service.desktop', but the service did not autostart. |

I have the feeling that some kind of behavior specific to Mint is in place. As I use Arch Linux and KDE as desktop environment I am not sure about what Mint is doing. Autostart files inside For now the only thing that comes to my mind is running |

Recently I replaced Pulseeffects with Easyeffects. Pulseeffects always started automatically and kept running after I closed the window. Easyeffects does neither. I'm hoping I can fix the issue by creating a text file with the required name and content that is placed in the proper folder. So ...
What should the file name be?
What is the required content?
Where should I put the file?
