I am puzzled about how to solve this.

I think Studio might be running pkgload::load_all(), which tries to do its own custom thing that may clash with instantiate packages. Best I can recommend right now is to install your package the normal way before running tests.

In bf1c8cf I increased verbosity for compilation, and I see devtools::load_all() compiles to a special directory in tempdir(), maybe that's a clue.

I also noticed the decision to compile is based on pkgbuild::needs_compile(), which implicitly expects a dynamic library to exist. instantiate is different because we have Stan models instead of .so/.dll files.
