"Set Auto-Sync" disabled / greyed out

Describe the bug

I create an item note, write something, click on export to set auto-sync, but "auto-sync" is greyed out / disabled. I cannot tick the checkmark.

So in your screenshot it says

Auto-Sync is available for "Each Converted to Standalone Exports" mode.

Please excuse my ignorance, I am new to Zotero.

I tried this here:

File > New Note > New Standalone Note

And then I right clicked the note, "Export Note".

-> Still greyed out "auto sync".

What about "item notes"?

Can I also auto sync "item notes" to markdown?

As you may find above the Markdown(.md) section in the export window, there's Linked Note Mode, under which you can find an Each converted to Standalone Exports option.

This auot-sync is not related to the note itself being a standalone or item note, it's about only being available when you export the notes and its linked notes as standalone exports (it means they will go to different MD files).
