Emotions for characters

Hi,

is there the option of adding character emotions, for example with smileys. In this way you could visually represent the mood of the respective situation.

It would be practical to be able to track in the outliner how characters feel emotionally, whether angry, happy, disappointed and so on.

If you mean by the use of auto-replace, it is probably not going to happen in this app, as it is quite costly to process the auto-replace when you type. But novelWriter itself has no problems with emoticon symbols themselves and should support it out of the box. But you'd have to copy/paste them from another source. If you have a few standard ones you use, you can probably just keep them in a note by themselves or something.

I guess you could also define your own auto-replace entries in Project Settings, and define, say, <happy> as 😄

How good that looks will depend on the font you use of course.

You could use the comment feature for this.

If you want more visibility (feature creep idea incoming) with an additional column in the project tree where the user could add a smiley to indicate the mood of the scene/chapter. An advantage of this way would be that the user can quickly see what the general mood of the entire story is, as opposed seeing it on a per scene basis. Is this what you meant @ChrisAlpinger ?

Anyway, I can entirely understand @vkbo would not want this, because this:

• Puts more data on the screen, thus making things potentially less clear.
• extends the project tree widget with even more functionality, which might reduce performance... is this actually an issue in this case?

A nice thing of extending the project tree widget with this would be smiley icons could be used (allowing for colored icons, making things more clear), as opposed to a glyph from a font which doesn't support multiple colors.

I'm not sure what you expected it to show, and where?

I'm guessing you pasted a screenshot when you replied by email. That does not work and does not show up in your answer. As I said before, replying by email is very broken and should be avoided. I would turn it off if I could.
