I got arm aarch64 running good enough for my use case (terminal only)

  • start with the default machine settings
  • edit machine
    • turn off QEMU->Use Hypervisor (to avoid crash in 4.6.4.107)
    • in Devices->Display->Emulated display card set ram framebuffer standalone device (ramfb) (to avoid NetBSD hanging during boot)
      • alternatively add New...->Serial and use terminal directly
        • optionally remove Display device

UEFI boot does not write to Serial device, be patient for a few seconds (it would be nice if we can have some output)
