disk i/o slow [apple silicon host & guest]

Host: M1 16Gb mac mini with Ventura. Guest is also ventura, 10gb ram / 4 cores.

Tested internal SSD tested via Black Magic Disk program:

host: 2000 mbps write / 3000 mbps read
guest: 600 mbps write and / 2500 mbps read

Is this just expected or might there be some setting I can try to toggle?

It does seem like a virtiofs mounted shared directory is must faster (2000 mbps write and 3000 mbps read - native performance). Tested both on the internal SSD and a thunderbolt SSD.
