Can only boot from ISO disk images

Hi, there. The UTM docs state that it can boot from any disk image file supported by QEMU. However, I have repeatedly tried to boot from *.img, *.vdi, and *.vmdk files with no joy. Is there a trick to booting from these and other disk images? Thanks in advance.
