Based on a tweet I recently put out with an idea (https://twitter.com/Andy_Boot/status/1541434882064367621):
Holding down the 'Alt' key should show tooltips against items which have an associated shortcut/key combo. Would be great to generally navigate/action the UI without the excessive need of a cursor. Similar to MS Word I suppose.
I am aware of the existing keyboard shortcuts and the dialog which appears when pressing Alt + Shift + K, however what I'm proposiing is the removal of this dialog, and instead to add easy to follow tooltips appear across the UI which when the necessary keyboard key is pressed alongside another key(s) (i.e. Alt) then that action is performed.
Small scenario (Add a Hero composition to the homepage doc type):
Note, I'm using made up keyboard shortcuts...
As you can see I've reused certain shortcuts for different actions. My thoughts are that:
Obviously, there's still some 'what if's?' to iron out. For example in the above scenario walkthrough, what if you're at step 5 and want to now edit a data type, what's the shortcut for backtracking? Perhaps Alt + Backspace would do the trick?
Anyways, it's an interesting idea which may help some, but likely not a concept that'll be adopted by all. What do you think? Would you reduce your mouse usage in favour of this feature? Do you already heavily use keyboard shortcuts over a mouse on another platform/software (don't say terminal 😉) Can you suggest a better approach?
All the best,
Andy
