Device Identification Number

Each device needs to be assigned an identification number.

The device needs to be registered to the central server once the device is online for the first time.

Any idea on how to implement a device identification number to a device?

I am thinking to store a file named device_id in the file system, just like i am storing other html, js, and config files. This file will have a unique identification number created by the server. Theoretically, a device identification number should never change.
So, basically, server will generate a unique identification number, and then save into the device device_id file.

Alternatively, we could use the mac address of the device. But, i don't know if that is a good idea yet, given the structure of the mac address.

Mac address would be fine or we can store in ROM ( data flash). If we use data flash we have to write on each module once.

If we use ROM to store or use a file system to a device Identification number. We have to change the Identification number on each device. Mac address will be a better solution I think.
