Nextcloud 31

Hey there,

thank you very much for the great work on SnappyMail, i really love this fine peace of software. But in the Nextcloud Store, the last compatible Nextcloud-Version is 30. Is there a chance that it will be compatible to Nextcloud 31? Version 31.01 is here, but i won't update, til i can't live without Snappy.

Here is a workaround based on Nextcloud for Arch Linux, but can be adopted for other implementations). Limited testing was done on this. Everything seems to work, but use at your own risk!

1. Upgrade Nextcloud to version 31 and perform all the usual post-upgrade actions.
2. Download the current release of SnappyMail for Nextcloud somewhere.

cd /tmp
curl -JLO https://snappymail.eu/repository/nextcloud/snappymail-2.38.2-nextcloud.tar.gz

3. Extract it to the proper location and assign correct ownership:

cd /usr/share/webapps/nextcloud/apps
tar xf /tmp/snappymail-2.38.2-nextcloud.tar.gz
chown -R nextcloud:nextcloud snappymail

4. Patch SnappyMail to allow it to be installed in Nextcloud 31:

sed -Ei 's/(max-version=)"30"/\1"31"/' /usr/share/webapps/nextcloud/apps/snappymail/appinfo/info.xml

5. Enable SnappyMail in Nextcloud:

sudo -u nextcloud php-legacy /usr/share/webapps/nextcloud/occ app:enable snappymail

6. Configure SnappyMail in the web interface of Nextcloud if it concerns a fresh installation.

Alternatively, just start using SnappyMail again if you upgraded Nextcloud and had SnappyMail installed previously.

Thank you for your reply and workaround. It seems that all is based on a simple Version-No. (or am i wrong), don't know why this can't be done by the dev(s). Should be not too complicated.

Or is there much more to do? I'm not deep enough into Nextcloud App-Development for the Answer.

Correct. All the patch does is change the Nextcloud "app" configuration to allow installation in Nextcloud 31. Furthermore, the workaround also installs (the patched) SnappyMail manually in Nextcloud due to the official version published in Nextcloud's repository refusing to install.

This is a workaround since it lacks all the other QA aspects of normal development. It basically uses brute force to get the older version running in a newer Nextcloud version, disregarding any possible changes in Nextcloud that might influence SnappyMail negatively. A suddenly incompatible API on either side could ruin your experience.

As far as my limited testing shows, this seems to work fine (for me!) under Nextcloud 31. That is no guarantee that it will work for others, and there definitely is no guarantee that whatever works now will continue to work with future Nextcloud versions.

Things are looking bleak...

As of 15.04.2025 snappymail.eu is not/no longer providing http/https service (no downloads possible).
I sincerely hope that this is a temporary issue, as I really like and appreciate the snappy mail client and its integration into nextcloud.

Sounds not good. But i'm a little bit confused. In "Actions" the is a Thread where the-djmaze said that he made snappymail compatible with Nectcloud 31 and also 32. But it seems that this is only the docker-version. I didn't know that there are serveral "Flavors" of Snappymail.
Anyway you are right, when Snappymail dies i will be very sad too. Maybe there's someone with enough programming-skills to fork it. Sadly i'm only a user.

I don't have the original file anymore. However, I did recreate the file with the NC 31 patch included.

snappymail-2.38.2-nextcloud-nc31.tar.gz

This is of course with the usual disclaimers: there is no support given, do not blindly trust random files you get from the internet, etc.

Do not tag me for support about this. If you do not know how to get this running yourself (not even combined with the previous instructions I wrote) it might be time for you to say goodbye to SnappyMail.

Thanks a lot @Zepmann . It installed fine. I can't go to Additional Settings to set it up but the software itself works. I'll try to figure this out myself. :)
