apt widget not working

as of this writing (Sep 7) I am having trouble with the apt-widget. The widget does not print the desired symbol in the bar, and therefore is un-clickable. If I checkout MAY 12 it works but I don't know with what commit it gets broken. As I say, git checkout f190f137 makes the icon visible again.
