Public chat or forum?

Personally, I greatly prefer Slack to gitter (maybe I'm just using gitter wrong, but it seems rather buggy and difficult to search history). Looks like you could use Matrix with gitter, but I haven't tried Matrix, and certainly not the bridge: https://github.com/matrix-org/matrix-appservice-gitter.

I'm happy to keep using the issue tracker for non-issues as well if that is preferred!

I haven't tried Matrix either. I also prefer slack over gitter, and I also have a feeling slack is more robust. Though, unless we build up a significant volume of communication, maybe we could just use issues for discussions for now.
