Getting a variable value outside the scope of its collection

Hello!
Why can't I get the value of the testimonialId1 variable with this code when I am outside the testimonials scope:

{{ scope:testimonials }}
   {{ collection:testimonials limit="1" sort="random" }}
     {{ testimonial1Id = id }}
     {{ testimonial1Id }}
    {{ /collection:testimonials }}
   {{ /scope:testimonials }}
 <div>
   {{ testimonial1Id }}
 </div>

I use Statamic 3.
