How can I change the status of a collection to unpublished?

I am trying through a query to put a news as not published. But the set does not work for the Published option. The published status still true.

$collection = CollectionRepository::findByHandle('news');
$newsCollection = $collection->queryEntries()->where('published', true)->get();

foreach($newsCollection as $new){
    $new->set($new->published(), false);
     $new->save();
}
