Strange taxonomy behaviour

We have a system that has collections and related taxonomies. These taxonomies have a few properties. For some strange reason, when a user edits a specific collection record or adds a new one, the attached taxonomy gets edited as well and loses all of its properties that have been set previously except the name field. In the commit log of the content, we can clearly see that before a certain record was edited, there is a commit for the related taxonomy that deletes all of its properties. Do you guys have any clue what could be the cause of this behaviour?
