How does dynamic text variable work?

I have the above set up, so that every 500ms it should poll the two variables and update. However I just had someone join my channel, and my ‎${value:discord_voice_channel_participants} variable didn't update.

1. How exactly does dynamic text variable work? Is it stored once and never updated?
2. Is my method actually the correct way to list up to date channel participants?

After a bit more trial and error, it seems to be off by one. Every time someone joins the voice channel, it will refresh the text, but it will not include the person who just joined.

when I'm in a channel by myself I see None. However when someone first joins, it still says none. Only when a second person joins will it reveal person1

text: <None //in a voice channel by myself
person1 joins
Text: <None //didn't update, off by one
person2 joins
Text: person1 //didn't update with person2
person3 joins
Text: person1|person2 //didn't update with person3

However leaving and rejoining the voice channel seems to fix it.
