Writing overlay text on images

I wonder how to write text on the image? I don't need any fancy, I'd like to have just a timestamp on it.

There is possibility of ->watermark() and I thought of creating another temporary transparent png file on the fly and then watermark it over the target picture, but I hope there is a simpler solution.
