Is it possible to make the Spring Bone Rigging work with non-CC hair?

Hi there.

I have a hair model made of hair cards and I want to rig it. Tried converting it to humanoid/prop but it gives me "Unsupported Character". Exporting it as a CC3/4 fbx and then importing it back to Blender also doesn't work. Is there something special/unique about CC hair cards that's required to work?
Honestly this is the best tool for rigging hair cards I've seen and it's a shame it is not a stand alone tool that's independent of CC.
