wsl installation

I'm at 6:10:00 in the course and I have some basic question:

1. Miscrosoft subsystem linux isn't working on windows 8. So I downloaded Cygwin terminal that has linux. Can I use it and not use Ubuntu ? and why is Ubuntu better ?
2. I have virtual box installed on my desktop. Should I create an environment instead and download nodejs and vs code and work on it or should I work on windows and Cygwin?

Hello @PatoSF
Using WSL is just a way to not get involved with messy stuff windows have at managing libraries, so you can do the following.:

1. Use just windows and install everything on it, not using WSL.
2. The problem with Cygwin is I'm not sure you'll have compatibility with VScode and you could run on crazy errors, so... dunno.
3. Using a virtual box machine is 100% not recommended for me, you have a really limited space of storage and your computer resources are half or less.

Wi that said I have to recommendations for you.

1. As I said, just install the libraries on windows and do not use WSL.
2. Update your windows to W10 or W11 and use WSL.

I had a similar issue on window 10 while trying to install WSL-
Turn out, my system Virtualization technology was turned off.
You can check it on cmd by typing systeminfo.exe

If it is turned off, you will see it there and can enable it :

via BIOS>system configuration>virtualization technology

Then install ubuntu manual from microsoftstore

I forgot to mention that, some BIOS does not have virtualization activated by default, so thanks @tobezhanabi for the tip.
