Connecting metamask wallet with remix

I'm trying to connect my metamask wallet with remix.ethereum.org. I was advised to go to the Environment scroll down menu and click injected provider. When I do this it stays on Remix VM (London). A message pops up saying that my metamask wallet must be running while I'm in remix. So I go bring up my metamask wallet, then I go back to remix and the same thing is happening. What can I do to ensure that my metamask wallet is running while I'm into the remix IDE?

You should be logged into your Metamask account—also notice the selected network (i.e. activated)—and both should be accessed on the same browser. Else, Remix cannot detect the extension.
