Hey, I assume you have added the 0.8.8 compiler in the hardhat config, if it's not there, add it.
When done, just remove the whole pragma solidity 0.8.8; line from SimpleStorage.sol, save the document, then, re-write pragma solidity 0.8.8; in the document again, save the document again and hopefully the syntax checker should show no errors.
