Seeking new home for the zed-slint extension

Hi Slint Team,

I'm a user of the zed-slint extension, which adds lsp support and syntax highlight to slint in the zed editor. It's been a really helpful tool for working with slint in zed.

Unfortunately, the current maintainer no longer has the time to dedicate to its upkeep, which has understandably led to development stalling. You can see some of the discussions around this here:

While contributions have been sparse so far, there are a few of us interested in adding a bit more functionality. Some initial ideas including enhancing syntax highlighting (one of the open PR's) and allowing the binary path to be loaded from settings.

I was wondering if the slint team would like to participate or help, as some editors are being supported already.

Some of the work:

• provide a new home (a new repo or inside editors/)
• updating the zed github repo to point to the new extension see docs

Since this is an extension for Slint, we naturally wanted to check with you first before exploring other avenues.
What are your thoughts on this?

We've seen and admire @flukejones 's excellent work on the zed extension. We're more than happy provide a new home either as repo or inside editors.

That sounds fantastic -- it’ll be great to finally see the Zed Slint extension merged into the editors/ section! I’d love to contribute and help maintain this extension moving forward. It’s a valuable tool for working with Slint in Zed, and I’m excited to be part of its development and upkeep. Looking forward to collaborating with others on improving and enhancing its features.

I've got a question right away: for the zed extension to be located in a git repository, does it have to be in the root directory or can it be in a sub-directory somewhere?

A Zed extension is a Git repository that contains an extension.toml.

If your extension is in a subdirectory within the submodule you can use the path field to point to where the extension resides.

Looking at the extension repo, there are several which are in a sub directory.
Example: https://github.com/acquitelol/elle/tree/rewrite/editors/zed https://github.com/mantou132/gem/tree/main/crates/zed-plugin-gem

What would be best way to do this? If you grab the files and add them I'll archive the old repos with a note

Do you mind opening the first PR? I don't really know how to deal with the git history in this case 😅

I’ve merged the Zed extension for Sint into the Slint repo under editors/zed/, preserving the full Git history using git filter-repo. All past commits are intact and traceable in the new structure.

You can check it out here before proceeding. I can open a PR to push these changes into the main branch if that works for everyone.

Also happy to help update the Zed extension repo to point to the new location in this repo once things are settled. Let me know how you'd like to proceed!
