Ability to 'pause' recording of the map for a mod

Heya! I'm writing here not because of a specific issue, but I was making an addon mod for Antique Atlas to adapt it to my specific wants in a modpack. One of the tweaks I wanted to make was to make the Atlas only record the map if you have the map item, which AFAIK Surveyor records all the time regardless of mod. I was wondering if there was some sort of API that could make Surveyor pause recording for a specific mod; I tried simply not listening to these changes when my requirements weren't satisfied and it kicked the client due to map desync.
