PyData middleware

As noted on our Discourse forum, there are several libraries in the PyData ecosystem built to solve problems in other scientific domains that make use of the same foundation as sgkit, e.g. Astropy, MetPy, Pangeo, and Satpy.

I'd like to use this thread to record useful abstractions that sit between these domain-specific libraries and the upstream PyData libraries.
