it seems Discord has been restricting what can be done programmatically for user accounts (non-bots). I made a very small Python server with Django and called the undocumented API from Discord that should allow the status to be set (#1, #2), but the server response I got was "405: Method Not Allowed"...

Rich Presence

Apparently there's an alternative in Discord called "Rich Presence" (mostly used by games), but the program updating the Discord status must be running on the same computer as the Discord client, which limits the options to make the experience more seamless.

Unofficial Libraries

There're also some unofficial libraries in GitHub (example), but using them in real accounts can break Discord's terms & conditions and lead to account bans.

I've come up with a pretty straightforward way of implementing these features as mentioned here in the discord server. I would have to mention this is not entirely possible (yet) as Weezify doesn't have desktop builds nor is open source (Though I known you're working hard on making it OSS) but once that's sorted out it's fairly easy.

Using the DiscordGamesSDK here, A C header sub with the library call functions can be called from the dart part of Weezify, and have it create a small "surface" of sorts to interface with the library.

Cool. So that will only be triggered from a desktop app?

Yep, sadly Discord doesn't have a public OAuth2 API which allows this type of edit to happen on the server side.

The GameSDK that @Laniku mentions is the newer name of the SDK that Discord provides for implementing "Rich Presence". It was built with games in mind, so that they can have some control on Discord to make the experience more seamless.

Reading at the docs, the SDK seems to be oriented to C++ and C# (usual languages in game development). The guidance when not using a game engine is to use C++ (see docs). @Laniku I don't have any experience with the GameSDK. I see in the diagram that an HTTP POST request would be enough. Do you have more references to that?

This would help scope the complexity of this effort if Weezify starts building a desktop app.

One cool thing is, because it's Flutter, I should be able to build desktop apps from the same codebase without too much trouble. I just don't know how many people would use them.

The POST request is just to let the server endpoint know that the song is changed. Having the games SDK set the track information via RPC and having it update in real time helps mitigate issues where the wrong song might have been showing or the username is stuck on something played before. A POST request would be more than enough if you just wanted to quickly update the username with no extra setup needed.

Edit; If a POST request alone is made, the need for a desktop client is eliminated entirely.
