Option for making a local network server

I'm finding this game really interesting but I've stumbled upon a lack of a really nice feature - being able to play on a local server with friends. I know that legacy versions of FreeSO relied on LAN servers only but I'd love to see an online (MMO-like gameplay) and LAN play options. Is there any chance for that?

The server code is part of this repo. What keeps you from running one yourself?

Just out of curiosity, how would you actually run a dedicated server with this? Because I'd be interested in maybe doing that for friends and using some custom objects, that are not in "vanilla" FreeSO.
